"Excellent session.  Well presented and explained - and appreciated in the context of a multitasking and pressured environment. Fantastic that this sort of thing can go on in the office, during the working day."

Mindfulness at Work

Mindfulness is fast becoming recognised by world-class organisations as a new way to improve leadership, employee resilience and productivity. Cutting edge companies like Google, eBay, Yahoo, Apple, as well as more established ones such as KPMG, GlaxoSmithKline and Barclays are leading the way in bringing mindfulness into the work and management environment.

Lawyers, judges, educators, corporate employees and executives are discovering the value of mindfulness, and programs can be found in workplaces, hospitals, health centres, student health services, and prisons throughout the world.

Stress in the Workplace
In today’s workplace staff have to meet high standards and increased workloads in the face of intense pressure. Fatigue, ill-health and absenteeism can be traced back to stress. According to a study conducted by the mental health charity, 'Mind', British businesses lose £26 billion each year in sickness, absence and lost productivity. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), in the period 2008/9 some 415,000 workers  believed they were experiencing work‐related stress during this period at a level that was making them ill. That year an estimated 11.4 million working days were lost due to work‐related stress, depression or anxiety. Workplace stress is major human issue and a major business cost.

Mindfulness training has been shown to help with stress, anxiety, depression and addiction.  It has been tested to the limit, you could say. A study conducted among US marines showed that soldiers who practised mindfulness were better equipped to deal with anxiety, stress, depression and insomnia. They were also able to remain calm and focused in the thick of battle.

Coming closer to home, among Transport for London employees who followed a mindfulness program, days off due to stress, anxiety and depression fell by 70%, and absences for all health conditions by 50%.

Hundreds of scientific studies show that mindfulness training reduces stress, increases the capacity to pay attention, fosters resilience and emotional intelligence and their awareness of oneself and others.

"Loved the session and I want to do more! I'm constantly fighting with random thoughts throughout the day; worrying about things I have to do, stewing on things that have already happened and even getting myself upset about things I worry may happen. This is exactly the kind of exercise I need to make myself focus on the present and things that I actually have influence over, such as how I respond to stressful situations and how I take in everything around me in the world. The course leaders were brilliant and I instantly felt a sense of calm when I sat down. Thank you!"

Mindfulness and Leadership
Studies at Harvard show that eight weeks of mindfulness training brings a significant increase in grey matter in regions of the brain associated with:
• sustained attention
• emotional regulation
• perspective taking
• rational decision-making

Mindfulness is an effective way of enhancing presence, attention and focus. It breaks down patterns of self-protectiveness, knee-jerk or habit-based problem solving. It can open the way to clearer, more creative and original thinking. It allows us to see and respond to others, and thus to work more effectively and harmoniously with them. It has also been shown to be an effective way of training managers in corporate social responsibility.
